I don't know the purpose of this device. The new revision of switch already makes the baterry life double, so what's the point of releasing this one? Just to cater to people who can't afford the standard Switch?

Surely this is going to replace the 3DS. I can't imagine buying a 3DS when this exists.

^ Yup.
Nintendo is simply trying to sell the Switch to people who would otherwise not buy (another) one, and they're focusing on kids. $300 is a lot to ask for a kids' toy, especially if you have more than one kid or already have a Switch. You don't have to worry about the kids plugging their Switch Lite in and taking over the TV (because it can't). It doesn't have the dock, or joy cons, or anything to lose.
It's for kids. And just to be aware, the 3DS line currently accounts for only 5% of Nintendo's income. 3DS is dead and all but gone.

As soon as the Switch Lite was announced, I put my 3DS XL up for sale on facebook. Gotta get what I can for it before no one at all wants it.

No, Switch does not play 3DS games.
There's a 3DS emulator available that seemed to be in pretty good shape a year ago. You might be able to play them that way at least.
